National Geographic and Google Earth

The Layers feature of Google Earth provides you access to all sorts of interesting information about places around the globe. One particularly neat collection of layers is called Featured Content. Currently, this layer shows you information about National Parks trails, video city guides, Jane Goodall's Gombe Chimpanzee blog and more.

My personal favorite Featured Content layer is National Geographic Magazine. This shows you places that pertain to specific National Geographic stories. For example, there is a National Geographic feature on Moab that displays a very neat photograph of a local mountain bike mural outside of Poison Spider Bicycles shop.

To view the National Geographic layer and other Featured Content layers, in the Layers panel, check Featured Content. Look for National Geographic yellow rectangle icons around the world.
